The properties we attribute to God doesnโ€™t quite harmonize well with the suffering, wickedness, and overall, unpleasant things that are inherent in the artificial and manmade world. According to traditional Christianity and Judaism, God is omnipotent, omnipresent, benevolent, eternal, unchanging, etc. How can God be all those things and still allow people to suffer the way they do? If God was all those things, surely he would have been able to stop certain tragedies from occurring (since heโ€™s all knowing, all powerful, all good, etc). Whitehead and Hartshorne's process theology basically states that God is not an eternal being; he can affect and be affected by temporal processes. The aspects of him that are eternal is his goodness, knowledge, wisdom, etc (these elements of the philosophy I donโ€™t find consistent.) The moreโ€ฆ controversial part of this philosophy is that God is not omnipotent. So, why didnโ€™t God stop the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 or stop Hitler? Their answer to this question is that he couldnโ€™t. The only power God does have in this sense is persuasion. He can attempt to steer us in the righteous direction but he cannot in anyway force us in any meaningful causal way (that would impede upon free will-- which is a vital aspect of Christian theology). Holocaust theology is asking the same question under a more Jewish framework. How could G-d let the Holocaust happen to his chosen people? There is no way to justify it by saying that it was meant to happen for the best or that G-d has a purpose at the end of the rainbow. How can a supposedly benevolent G-d sit and watch such tragedy without interference? This is Hans Jonasโ€™ interpretation which may ring familiar: G-d is not omnipotent (well, If I understood him correctly, he made himself this way in relation to the world in order to fully give himself to it). Itโ€™s not that G-d didnโ€™t want to intervene, he couldnโ€™t. Whilst the events were occurring, G-d wasnโ€™t watching the earth silently, but suffering along with humanity. Iโ€™m not religious or anything but I found this interpretation of G-d and the question of evil amidst tragedy to be especially interesting.
